How to draw a fence sketch that gets you a fast, accurate quote

Figuring out exactly how much fencing material you need can be tricky — especially if you’ve never installed a fence before. That’s why WamBam offers free, no-obligation quotes from our team of dedicated Project Consultants. We’re here to make sure you buy exactly what you need. Not more, not less.

The fastest way to get an accurate quote? Send us a sketch. It doesn’t have to be pretty — it just needs to have the right information.

Why a sketch makes such a big difference

A simple hand-drawn sketch helps our team understand your project at a glance. It lets us spot if you’ll need specialty items like surface mounts, angle helper kits, or swivel brackets — things that can easily get missed without a visual. It also helps us catch anything that might slow down your install before you even get started.

Good to know: Any sketch is better than no sketch. Even a rough drawing gets us most of the way there.

What to include in your fence sketch

Imagine you’re a bird flying over your house, looking straight down. Draw what you see. Your sketch should include:

  • A basic outline of your property showing where you want the fence to go
  • Linear footage for each fence run — this is the most important detail. Measure each section separately, not the total square footage of your yard
  • Gate locations and widths — note if you need double gates, as this affects both materials and cost
  • Any special conditions — steep slopes, posts mounting to concrete, or areas where you want a different fence style (like mixing privacy and picket panels)

Basically, this is all we need!

How to measure your linear footage

You’ll need to walk your property with a tape measure or measuring wheel. Measure each run of fence separately and write those lengths directly on your sketch. Remember: we need the length of each fence line, not the square footage of your backyard.

Heads up: If you leave out the linear footage, expect a follow-up call from us — we can’t quote your project without it!

What about using a survey or property map?

Survey maps can work, but only if you draw your fence lines on top of them with run lengths and gate locations marked. On their own, they’re usually too cluttered with unrelated information to be useful. Honestly, a plain hand-drawn sketch is easier for everyone.
