How to check for underground obstructions before installing your fence
If you suspect your yard might have rocks or other obstructions underground, it’s worth checking before you order your fence. Some ground conditions, like soil peppered with medium sized rocks, aren’t compatible with a no-dig fence system. A few minutes of testing now can save you a headache during installation.
Here are two simple ways to check your soil at each anchor location.
Method 1: Steel rebar probe
What you’ll need: A 1/4 inch to 1/2 inch thick round steel rebar with a pounding cap, or equivalent. Look for a 36 to 42 inch length. These are available at most hardware stores for under $10.
- Mark the future location of each anchor along your fence line.
- Use the steel rebar to probe the ground at each marked spot, checking for resistance from rocks or other obstructions.
Method 2: Auger bit and drill
What you’ll need: A 1 inch or 1.5 inch diameter auger bit, 18 inches long, with an 18 inch extension. Both are available at most hardware stores. A pistol-grip electrical drill works best, though a heavy duty cordless drill may work in some conditions.
- Mark the future location of each anchor along your fence line.
- Use the drill and auger bit to probe the ground at each marked spot, checking for resistance from rocks or other obstructions.
Important: If you hit consistent resistance across multiple spots, your soil may not be a good match for a no-dig system. Call us before ordering so we can help you figure out the best path forward.
